Path of Exile 2 players can mistake The Master’s Reach for a straightforward defensive upgrade because its Armour and Energy Shield rolls look substantial. The real question is whether Open Weakness stays available often enough to make the conditional effects useful without leaving your character less protected. Treat the listed stats as a starting point, not a promise of extra safety; consider your Path of Exile 2 Currency budget only after comparing the full slot tradeoff.
Compare the defenses you gain with the ones you lose
The listed 200-300% increased Armour and Energy Shield, 75-125 additional maximum Life, and 15-25 Intelligence make the item look easy to assess. They are not a complete defense sheet. Compare your character with both pairs equipped, including the resistances and useful modifiers your old gloves provide. The higher printed rolls don’t automatically make the swap safer.
Make that comparison against the content that is giving you trouble. If a boss hit kills you before recovery can matter, missing mitigation, Life, or resistance on the replacement may outweigh its conditional value. Keep your current pair until the rest of your build can cover a protection gap; don’t reshape several slots just to preserve one item’s appeal.
Measure Open Weakness during real encounters
Open Weakness gives the gloves a clear target: Rare and Unique enemies. That makes them worth evaluating in a boss encounter or a map with dangerous rares, where the condition can matter more to your decisions than it does during routine clearing. Watch the target state instead of assuming the effect stays active from first contact to the end of the fight.
Pay attention during phase transitions and whenever the enemy is out of reach. If you can’t connect with the target during those windows, the interaction offers no immediate help while you’re repositioning or waiting for an opening. Base your expectations on the access you actually have in that encounter, not on uninterrupted contact.
Use recoup as follow-up recovery, not a shield
An enemy with Open Weakness must be hit to activate Eat a Soul, so landing attacks is part of the setup. Choose a skill you can use while keeping a safe route out. Faster attacks help only when the opening lets you connect without taking avoidable hits; during a boss telegraph, staying in place for one more strike may cost more than the interaction is worth.
The 80-100% Life recoup applies to damage taken from enemies with Open Weakness. It helps after damage lands, so it can’t replace the Life and mitigation needed to survive the initial hit. Treat it as support against pressure you live through, not as permission to stand in a marked attack. Keep dodging moves you can read, especially when one hit can end the attempt.
Check the full setup before changing your routine
Untether adds a separate fit check. Read its in-game description and confirm that its use fits your available skill controls before building your combat routine around it. Any related Evasion, Energy Shield, Low Life, or Cooldown Recovery modifiers also need to be judged in context. A conditional benefit won’t necessarily improve every version of a build.
Consider whether supporting the interaction makes your rotation awkward, costs a needed defensive modifier, or requires changes across several slots. If it does, the gloves may be a poor fit even when their listed effects look appealing. A setup that demands too many adjustments can leave less room to handle mistakes in a difficult fight.
Try a familiar encounter with your current gloves, then repeat with The Master’s Reach under comparable conditions. Note how often Open Weakness is available, whether you can land hits safely, and how your Life holds up after surviving pressure. If the replacement requires costly slot changes, compare the options through a poe2 trade site before committing. Keep the gloves when the complete character performs more reliably, and switch back if the conditional setup makes survival less consistent.
